Antimicrobial resistance is widely recognised to be a global threat to human health, with the World Health Organisation listing it as a priority issue of our time.
To tackle antimicrobial resistance, aOne Health approach is clearly needed. We must view antimicrobial resistance as an ecologic
problem, not an issue confined to either food production, community general practice, veterinary or hospital prescribing, as antibiotics affect bacteria everywhere.
The NCASwill be the lead national body for antimicrobial stewardship, bringing together many of the essential groups in the scientific community with an interest in antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship, covering both veterinary and medical sectors.
Research will be undertaken relating to antimicrobial consumption, inappropriate use, interventions to change prescribing behaviour and measuring the effectiveness of these interventions.
This research is crucial to the successful implementation of Australia's first National Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy 2015-2019. New knowledge generated by the research undertaken by the NCASwill inform policy and practice around antimicrobial prescribing for both humans and animals in Australia and our neighbours.
